PT Freeport Indonesia started its exploration activities in 1967 and currently has conducted its exploration in two places in Papua, including Erstberg mine (since 1967) and the Grasberg mine (since 1988), in Tembaga Pura, Mimika District, Papua Province. The Grasberg minerals district is the world’s largest copper and gold mine in terms of recoverable reserves. PT Freeport Indonesia operates under a Contract of Work (COW) with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia.
